Toilet Training 1yr old male Malt/Pap

I have a 1yr old male Malt/Pap. Toilet training is a nightmare. As a puppy I trained him to go on a special mat inside the hse by using treats,he used it most of the time but as he got older he won't go back to it if damp & will go beside or elsewhere on the floor. I then planted a turfed area outside in the courtyard & would leave the door ajar for him to come and go as he pleased. That went well until we got rain..wouldn't get his feet wet & began doing his business all over the courtyard. Now he does it wherever he pleases unless Im there to tell him to go on the grass. He only has access to the kitchen/family room in the house and now I cant leave him unattended in this area as he immediately wees on the lounge

ANSWER: Toilet Training
This sounds more like a dominance issue - where the dog believes he is in charge and has decided that he can toilet wherever he wants. One of the first things would be to remove the smell of any possible urine in the house (which does not get removed by normal cleaning agents). Pet stores sell sprays for this, or use a white vinegar based solution. Removing the smells is crucial for new learning to happen. Also, please ensure that there is no medical reason for your problem. If the dog is not desexed this is also an issue to consider. Start taking him on the leash to where you want him to toilet, take him out regularly and reward for good behaviour - patience, persistence and consistency are required as the dog will try and do its' own thing. I would also make sure that the dog perceives you as the leader. Get professional help if persists, as the drive here is dominance and the breed mix can be very stubborn.
