Mini Schnauzer missing mate and barking

Our 12 yo male mini schnauzer died last week and his mate, a 9 yo mini schnauzer bitch is missing him and barking when we leaqve the house. How can we change her behaviour as we both work and don't want to use citrus sprays or other unfriendly actions?

ANSWER: Mini Schnauzer missing mate and barking
Very sorry to hear. Dogs go through a similar grieving process as humans do - and therefore this all will take some time to settle. Best not to over compensate with affection or molly coddle her, but by all means try and interact with her more and play games like fetch, hide and seek etc - they stimulate her. Don't overly change things, a gradual change is better - eg don't remove all this toys etc. She may well start sleeping on his spot/bed etc. Don't fuzz when you leave and come back. If she hasn't been a barker this may well settle down again. Reward her good behaviour and ignore the bad bit and patience. If continues, please seek professional advice from a good behavioural trainer.
