10 year old cocker - over excited and digging

I have a 10 year old cocker spaniel who has been pretty good, but lately he has been getting more and more excited at the front door before walkies, he has started excavating the lawn (like tonight whilst I was home) and a lot of whining after his dinner. This is all new and strange behaviour. We moved 5 years ago and had a baby 3 years ago - and I can't think of anything "new" which might be prompting this relatively sudden change in behaviour. I thought dogs were supposed to slow down as they age!?

Well considering there are no major and recent enviromental changes, I might suggest it may be some 'senior moments' setting in. There maybe a few harmless but noticable neurological changes happening in his ripe old age, similar to us when we age. It might be a good idea just to get the once over by your vet to make sure there is nothing sinister going on ? although it seems like it could just be the aging process .... going backward!
