My boy Jake is a Staffy x heeler

My boy Jake is a Staffy x heeler (possibly!) he suffered a T-Bone injury to his lower spine @ age 6yrs. Since then he's had limited use of his left rear leg( incl: sufering pressure sores) and been very happy. He is now 12, he has always been a snorer (staffy owners understand) but he's now panting during the night. He still has some use of his back leg, but I worry as to how much pain he's in? How do I gauge it????? 'Quality of life' is very important!!! He's my boy!!!

Answer: My boy Jake!!!
Poor Jake. It's very hard to tell if a dog is in pain just by looking at them. I tend to think, if they are eating, interested in life, and still affectionate towards you - they are ok. Once clinical signs start to happen, one can assume they aren't very well. This is a difficult area and generally speaking only close observation on you part will help the situation.
