Issue with new pup and old dog

Hi there, Have some issues with our new pup and our old dog. We have just brought home a aussie bulldog (Calamity) and she's just wonderful, however we have a 9 year old cocker spaniel (Lucy) that isn't a fan at all. Lucy growls at the pup whenever she goes near anything thats hers, she has attempted to bite her on a number of occassions. We have tried a number of things, and haven't been successful. We always acknowledge Lucy first, feed her first, Give her a treat before the other and have maintained lots of affection towards her. The pup wants to play and lie next to her however she just doesn't want anything to do with her. What else could you suggest? Looking for anything that will help them get along.

Answer: Just brought a new puppy home
Now, without sounding silly ? this is ok. Presuming you dont feel Lucy will actually attack Calamity, I would sit back and just keep a watchful eye over them. As dogs are pack animals, Lucy needs to let Calamity know that she is the boss and Calamity must do as she says. This may even include a bit of a scuffle, or loud barks, or gritting of the teeth, or even small nips. I think what you are doing is great by approaching Lucy before the pup, you seem to be on the right track. Of course we do not want either of them to hurt each other, but it is ok for Lucy to express some firm words to Calamity. Within time it should all die down. Do just keep a very close eye on them though, and make sure Lucy has some time away from the pup with you.
