Jack Russell chewing our timber outdoor setting

Jack Russell chewing our timber outdoor setting

Hi Bec, we have aJack Russell approx. 4 yrs old that we got from the jack russell rescue, and he is chewing our timber outdoor setting. We have told him no and hit the setting and said NO to him a few times, but he seems to have a bit of a thing for wood. Can you please help? Also he is very friendly outside home, but if new people come here he growls at them, particularly kids. Another help please. Kellie (Sydney)

Answer: chewing dog
Hi Kellie! I think he may be doing it out of boredom, it may also be a bit of a anxiety thing. Will he happily chew on a big bone if offered? Or only the wood? If only the wood you need to break the cycle / habit. Spray vinegar on the wood and encourage play and chewing with appropriate toys. Try and offer more walkies as well. When visitors arrive have him on the lead in sit position. Have visitors greet him, they could even give him a treat. Once in the house, he can go off the lead to sniff. The lead offers control.
